Make adoption your option

for everyone
(Photos below)

Last month, PAWS held an animal welfare lecture at UP Diliman, and featured a shelter dog and shelter cat for adoption. One of our volunteers, Angelica, fell in love with the shelter cat we featured, "Palma," and decided to adopt her. Angelica is a dog person so we gave her a crash course on kitty care that day. After a stop at a pet supplies store to get the basic kitty stuff, Palma finally came home :)

*Note: We just found out from another PAWS volunteer Celine that Palma's shelter name was "Zoe." Angelica has renamed her to "Hyacinth" :P

Here's Angelica's account on her kitty adoption. Congrats Angelica and Hyacinth! :)

"From "Palma" to "Askat" to "Menggay" to "Hyacinth."

"Palma" was the name we gave her on our way to the University of the Philippines that 20th of February 2008 as a tribute to the venue of her first stint as PAWS' shelter cat representative. I did not really pay too much attention to this three-colored feline since being a dog person, I was busy petting and hugging Ely, the sweet shelter dog. But at the lecture, she never left my lap and promptly stole my heart and so I adopted her. Friends suggested numerous names like "Askat" or "Purrdy," even my mom wanted the name "Menggay" for her, and for a week after adopting her, she was still unnamed.

PAWS volunteers like Liza gave numerous advice on how to feed and care for her, they were all very helpful. Since her arrival here at home, she has been great. Before leaving the office, I make sure to give her enough food for the day, kibble being her favorite. After a very hectic day at work, tired and all, we play, which she absolutely loves doing, and it somehow takes the stress or the sadness of the day away. The only problem I've encountered so far is this one day when I tried to change the kitty litter from kusot (wood shavings) to newspaper, as newspaper is easier to clean. I got home after work and she pood and peed on the cushions as if to say, "Your comfort? What about mine?" She won that one.

I'm looking at her now and she's looking at me with those eyes, so cool and calm, the way cats should be. The other cats I've encountered hate being cuddled or kissed, but she accepts these placidly. The day I named her, I opened the window to my unit to see if she'll run away. She jumped up on the window, watched the busy street, sniffed the air outside and sat back on the carpet. She knows where she belongs now, she is content and I am too. I named her "Hyacinth."

Please adopt a pet from PAWS and give another dog or cat a chance to be loved and experience the fulfillment of being loved back unconditionally."

i'm so glad our activity allowed you and Hyacinth to bond and eventually become unseparable.

* i think our cats prefer kusot too. they scrape the newspaper out of the litterbox and leave it on the floor. hehehe...

i didn't know kusot or wood shavings can be used? I just use real kitty sand. Don't they get splinters from the wood?

yep, that was actually recommended by friends who have catteries (seasoned rescuers who have multi-cats, that number in the fifties to eighties, per cattery! :P), we only tried it recently and it's worked fine so far.

i used to use kitty litter too (the clumping sand type), but with 4 cats at home and 15 cats at our office, it was getting really OUCH on the pocket. a 22.7-kg box of Kitty Comfort clumping litter (the brand that we preferred) costs around P850+, and would only last our office cats 5 days, while the kusot only costs P20 per sack :). also, the Kitty Comfort is mabilis mag-out of stock (people HOARD it!), so it was quite stressful to have to constantly call up the supermarket and wait for their next batch of deliveries, then rushing to the supermarket pag meron na and then hoarding the boxes. at least kusot, we can get at any sash factory :)

it's also lighter to carry and more environment-friendly (bec it's biodegradable). also, to our surprise, it didn't stink at all.

nope, they don't get splinters naman from the wood bec the shavings are quite soft. i once tried a brand called Woody Pet, it works the same as kusot, but boy, were the wood pellets hard, and when i would run my hand through it parang it pricks your skin. so i stopped using it bec i was worried baka masakit sa feet ng kitties. pero this kusot is soft naman, so it's all good :)

Thanks for posting this! :)
I've 3 cats and it's been burning a hole in my pocket and I'm constantly being scolded for spending too much on my cats (food & cat litter). Will definitely try kusot. THANKS A BUNCH!!!!!!

Oh but for those who're in need of kitty litter, it's almost always available at those pet stores at Macapagal Ave. I've been getting Pura litter there for the past months cos Kitty Comfort or Jonny Cat have been out of stock.

my problem is the smell. hindi ba mabilis mangamoy ang kusot? although prompt naman kaming maglinis ng box, medyo ang baho talaga ng poopie nina oreo and friends.

Posted on my multiply site, from hunybuny - she thought I adopted Hyacinth. Great cat tips:

Hi, Kristin. I am very happy for you and Hyacinth. Most of us tend to think that adopted cats are lucky, but actually, we're the lucky ones. We may think that we chose them, but in reality, they're the ones who choose us.

If I may give you some tips, I think it would be better (and more economical in the process) if you would use kitty litter. It actually makes poop clean up easier for you. You can get some from Canine Depot (I think they sell it for 80 pesos per 2 kg). Or, if you have enough savings, go for the big 20kg bag of Pura cat litter (I swear by it ---- their poop will not stink as much!). It's 700 pesos, but it'll last you 3-4 months even with daily changes. It also comes with a free litter box.

To make it more sanitary (with less stink ), we line the litter box with newspaper. Then we place a scoopful of kitty litter (we use a can of Spam as gauge). At the end of the day, we just bundle up the newspaper lining, put it in a plastic bag and chuck it in the trash can.

Cats don't like the smell of their poop (so we're not the only ones who find it yucky). If the litter box is full, they look for someplace else to do their thing.

If you feed her purely cat food, her poop won't stick that bad. Canine Depot sells Dinnertime Cat by the kilo at only 75 pesos. That'll last her about 2 weeks (depending on her appetite).

Good luck! I know you will have lots of beautiful memories with her. :)

Wow! the cute cat is home! I am happy for the cat's master/owner/foster parent Angelica for taking time to give the cat a second chance to have a better life. Keep up the good job!
