Tiopi and Adonis Do Baguio

Tiopi is my boss's shelter-adopted aspin whom we "borrowed" as a substitute Dr. Dog for Baguio (The original Dr. Dog, Cass, couldn't come because of a limp). Dr. Dog Adonis is also a shelter-adopted aspin, owned by Rhea Oropilla. Natasha and I babysat their precious babies for 4 days of Baguio.

These were two sweet dogs, but I missed my own furkids terribly, and glad to be home now (*huggles my

PAWS Adoption: Hyacinth is home!

(Photos below)

Last month, PAWS held an animal welfare lecture at UP Diliman, and featured a shelter dog and shelter cat for adoption. One of our volunteers, Angelica, fell in love with the shelter cat we featured, "Palma," and decided to adopt her. Angelica is a dog person so we gave her a crash course on kitty care that day. After a stop at a pet supplies store to get the basic kitty stuff, Palma finally came home :)

*Note: We just found out from another PAWS volunteer Celine that Palma's shelter name was "Zoe." Angelica has renamed her to "Hyacinth" :P

Here's Angelica's account on her kitty adoption. Congrats Angelica and Hyacinth! :)

"From "Palma" to "Askat" to "Menggay" to "Hyacinth."

"Palma" was the name we gave her on our way to the University of the Philippines that 20th of February 2008 as a tribute to the venue of her first stint as PAWS' shelter cat representative. I did not really pay too much attention to this three-colored feline since being a dog person, ...

Re-posting: No to Homophobia

Most of my closest friends are gay, so this issue is close to my heart. I saw how painful it was for my bestfriend, how he had to stay at my home and then at another friend's home because he had to run away from his homophobic family, who could not accept him. Was "gender" that important, that a family would bear being away from one of their children for a long time? Not knowing if their child was safe, or where he was sleeping that night? Or that they taught their other child to loathe her brother because of his sexual orientation?

My mom almost did the same thing to my kid cousin, but I fought her tooth and nail on it.

Homophobia is WRONG.

Re-posting from http://socomedigmeout.multiply.com/journal/item/76/No_To_Homophobia :

"No to Homophobia

I am the boy who never finished high school, because I got called a fag everyday

I am the girl kicked out of her home because I confided in my mother that I am a lesbian.

I am the prostitute working the streets because nobody will hire a transsexu...

Good Morning Kuya and Spay / Neuter

A very interesting post by Nice Rodriguez in the PAWS e-group:

"I am just wondering if someone else watched UNTV's Good Morning Kuya show this morning. One of the hosts Rene Jose was reacting to CARA's catch/spay/release program, saying it's not right to catch the strays, neuter them (kapon) and release them back in the streets. And when he asked around for the other minor hosts/guests to give their opinions, nobody opposed him. There were no advantages offered about spaying and neutering of stray cats and dogs.

I've been watching the program for the last few months because I find their political commentaries refreshing, enlightening and funny. I am just bothered because first of all, nobody in the show seemed to be interested in the topic. They didn't really care about all the cats and dogs out in the streets, with only one commentator worrying more that he might drive over a stray at night and thus, endanger his own life. Mr. Jose seemed to be more concerned about emasculating ...

I'm medium-sized, with soft, cottony white fur speckled with red markings.

I was abandoned at the shelter on November 9, 2007. I don't have any medical problems, but I will need some dental work to make my smile perfect again. And as you can see, I do have a great smile!

I am a favorite among many of the volunteers at the shelter because I'm an extraordinarily gentle and affectionate dog, well-behaved, even-tempered, and, I daresay, extremely cute, too.
PAWS Booth at Cocoa, Boozer, and Malone's Birthday Paw-ty

Our heartfelt thanks to the Say family (Sharon and Ed and their furkids Cocoa, Dr Dog Boozer, and Malone) for sharing their special day with PAWS and CARA. Their guests brought donations in cash and in kind for our shelter babies.

A nice message from Sharon: "..Lastly, thanks to everyone who opened their hearts and donated to PAWS and Cara Phil. These two Animal Welfare NGO's are so special to me...and I feel so happy when were able to help them any way we can. According to Anna (Paws) and Albie (Cara), they got a lot yesterday....both in kind and in cash! So to all of you, thank you thank you! I hope we all find our way of helping these two groups. Not necessarily by donating but even just by volunteering our time and effort. I hope through my parties, I'm able to encourage others to help them and recognize their need for our help."

Screen Captures from the actual dolphin slaughter in Taiji, Japan as presented in a video by Ric O' Barry

It happened in Taiji. It was orchestrated by the Taiji whale museum. These dolphins are captured to meet supply and demand for an ever growing swim-with-the-dolphins program."

In the Philippines, dolphin show organizers may claim they aren't purchased from the sea or the drive fisheries...so where did they get the dolphins exactly? The only place I could think of are the aquariums or oceanariums. And where do the dolphins in oceanariums come from? It all boils down to the drive fisheries - the heart of this industry.

Screencaptures 22 - 24 are pictures of the same type of dolphin and whale killings going on in other countries.
PAWS and EII Picket Against the Movers and Shakers Dolphin Show in Metrowalk

The organizers of "The Wonderful World of Dolphins and Sea Lions," MOVERS AND SHAKERS, still put up a travelling dolphin show this year, despite receiving information from animal welfare and environmental groups a year ago that these marine mammal shows are inhumane. And from what I heard of their statement to media yesterday, these people with no conscience seem to still not understand that what they're doing is unacceptable to a humane society.

I hope a good number of people who were planning to watch this show decided not to after seeing, hearing, or reading about the cruelty behind these shows from the campaigns of PAWS, EII (Earth Island Institute), Kalikasan Society, AGHAM, and PETA on TV news, the newspapers, online blogs, websites, and e-groups, forwarded e-mails, and word-of-mouth.

Last year at the same show by Movers and Shakers at the SM Mall of Asia, a mother-and-son pair decided to forego watching the dolphin show after listening to Anna and Trixie's speeches over th...
